A Global Map layer lets you view different map overlays of Mars, showing the orb's infrared signature or surface elevation in color-coded form. With Mars 3D you can leave Earth and do a little extraterrestrial tooling around on the terrain of the red planet.

Google Earth 5 now includes another neat feature for those times when you feel the need to get away-really, really far away. Those taken before the early 1990's are all in black and white and cover only certain patches of the Earth. As you'd expect, newer satellite imagery show more detail and color. It's one thing to read about the past and see photos, but to be able to experience this through a time-lapse view is truly novel and powerfully effective. At the launch event, Gore used this tool to show how global warming has shrunk glaciers over just a few decades. I also witnessed environmental changes over time, such as the desertification of Africa's Lake Chad and the destruction along the Gulf Coast wrought by Hurricane Katrina.

After that, I headed over (and back) to a patch of the Nevada desert in 1950, then watched as it became today's Vegas strip. I first jumped over to Beijing and watched the development, over the years, of the Olympic Village for the 2008 Summer Games. Clicking on it lets you view newer and older satellite imagery from around the globe, so you can observe changes for a region over time. To the right of the touring button you'll find the Historical Imagery button, which bears the icon of a clock. Recording a tour is simple: Click on a small camera icon on the top toolbar, and you'll get a control bar from which you can record (as well as play and, of course, stop playing or recording).- Next: History and Environment The touring feature lets you record and narrate your actions in Google Earth, then save them as a KML file so that you can share your multimedia journey with others. Clicking on an icon of a great white shark off the coast of California let me view the predator's movements from its watery perspective as it cruised the Pacific. The amalgam lets you swim along with tagged, satellite-tracked sea animals on their underwater journey. Other layers include Jacques Cousteau, which takes you on a video tour of areas the famous explorer covered, and the cool Animal Tracking, which combines Google Earth's ocean exploration with a new touring feature. The National Geographics layer lets you put your knowledge to the test by taking a geography quiz.

So, for example, click on Explore the Ocean and you can view articles, images, and video for specific regions. Google Earth 5.0 offers 21 new layers dedicated to ocean exploration. But my underwater excursion didn't go as well-and sometimes not at all-when I was piloting the older machine in my cube or my three-year-old MacBook at home. I had no trouble when I used a desktop from the Labs with an ATI Radeon x300 graphics card.

Note that your computer needs a fairly robust graphics system to take full advantage of the ocean view. Or you can simply plug in its latitude and longitude coordinates (11.35,142.2) into Google Earth's Fly to field. If you have the Borders and Labels layer checked, you see the entire length of the trench surrounded by a white border. You can find the trench off the coast of Guam. For a really exciting test dive, zoom over to the deepest point in the ocean, the Mariana Trench. In the deeper ocean, I often found myself staring into an endless expanse of blue water. I found that the interesting areas to explore underwater tended to be coastal areas. At that point, you see a topographical view of the underwater terrain. Navigation works in much the same way as it does when you're exploring on land, but when you zoom close enough on a body of water you're hovering over, you dip under the surface.

Google Earth maps both the ocean surface and the seafloor. It's just more fun to use, and the latest version of Google's offering only propels it further ahead of the competition. However, Google Earth provides far deeper, richer environments to explore. I also think that LiveSearch's Virtual Earth 3D provides better 3D renderings of cities than Google Earth's comparable 3D Buildings layer. I had no problem searching for exact locations with Google Earth, but LiveSearch Maps did a better job of finding locations by keywords, such as a person's name, business, or landmark.

Google Earth still lags behind Microsoft's LiveSearch Maps when it comes to local search capabilities.
